The Founder.

During the 1970s, as I was growing up, my father was regarded as one of the largest travel agents in Asia, with a network spanning several airlines and multiple cities. I grew up in considerable privilege, and was never taught the gamut of running it.

His death changed everything.

Almost overnight, I stepped from my early twenties into the chair of a business that he had reigned for thirty years, with his own trade secrets, financial affairs, and a web of personal relationships that had taken him a lifetime to weave. I was grieving, disoriented, and a total stranger to what I had inherited. This was one of the biggest insecurity and insanity I have ever faced.

Three days after his death, and my first day at office, I calculated the exact length of his life.

“I could not possibly do the seconds, but I could definitely try one dollar for every minute he had lived: $28,653,120 in my first year from his seat”. I attained that goal on December 31, 1988, six months after his death. Call it grief, insomnia, survival instinct, obsession, or some strange combination of all four, thirty-eight years later, I have still not fully recovered from the spine freezing jitters I had experienced back in 1988.

Then came the Gulf War of 1990, and with it the destruction of my expanded international trade operations. By 1992, I had shattered and history.

Over the next 10 years, I rose. I fell. I rose again. Three times over. And what I learned cost more than any fortune:

Creating wealth and preserving wealth are two entirely different disciplines.

And that is where my story stops, and O CARTEL begins.
